What exactly is the alpaca lifestyle? I guess one could say it is different things to different people. For us, it has truly been the road to financial independence and stress-free living. It enabled us to pick and choose where to live, escape sky high property taxes and enjoy the benefits of agricultural tax assessments in our dream house and property amidst stunningly beautiful surroundings. Angela already had some freedom as a school teacher in terms of where she could work. Now she can share the alpaca lifestyle with her students on field trips to our farm. I can truly say I don't miss the horrors of commuting, something I think about each morning when I walk to my barn. I also enjoy setting my own hours and not answering to anyone. How wonderful it is to be home for lunch on the porch and spend quality time with my family any time, including the chores we do together. Then there are the investment aspects. I was fortunate enough to be able to "retire" from trading commodities at an early age but did not look forward to living off of savings. There are not many investments out there that provide enough income to live and I needed something to keep me busy. The alpaca business offered the opportunity to build wealth and make "a livin, not a killin" while doing a job I love. Having said this, I think the aspect we enjoy most about the alpaca lifestyle is the animals themselves: what they bring to the table, their gentle dispositions, grace, beauty and unhurried ways.

Whether you are able to quit what you're doing now and go "hands on" as we have done or decide to keep your day job while raising alpacas, the alpaca lifestyle is a worthwhile alternative.
